When we named Sophia Fresh’s What It Is one of the best singles of 2008, I declared that “Sasha Fierce can now commit suicide,” and now at the top of the year comes another single by a brazen girl group that should leave Miss “Female Version of a Hustla” running back to Rich Harrison in her Gareth Pugh.
Electrik Red‘s “We Fuck You,” is definitive, dirty, demanding, and determined. The girls of Electrik Red take the kind of lyrics that once propelled Foxy Brown and Lil Kim to the top of their game to cleverly command respect, but despite those very lyrics, the girls of Electrik Red never manage to sound raunchy – they simply know what they want and are unwilling to compromise. In the end, the girls of Electrik Red have managed to present themselves as sexy commanding women who know exactly what they want without having to go the tired male bashing route of their once innovative predecessors to conquer the world one club at a time.
