Video : Anna Baltzer & Dr. Mustafa Barghouti on Daily Show
In a completely un-edited interview, Anna Baltzer & Dr. Mustafa Barghouti sat down with Jon Stewart to discuss Palestinian-Israeli non-violent cooperation groups and the future of both Israel and occupied Palestine.
Stewart did not let down on Baltzer and Dr. Barghouti addressing specifically Palestinian propaganda, Israel as an Arab scape goat, and the the disproportionate relationship between actual Palestinian aid and anti-Israel rhetoric coming out of wealthy and frivolous Arab leaderships.
I don’t think either guest fully addressed the questions, but perhaps the format and time constraints of The Daily Show do not allow for clear discussion about the nuances of such a complex issue.
In total though, both Dr. Barghouti and Baltzer made a clear case that challenged mainstream Western ideals about Palestine and Israel and the interview itself was an incredible moment in a media age where ideologues constantly bash one another in an endless ideological game of cops and robbers:
“This is not something new and novel, just not something we tend to hear a lot about. Historically even,Jews and Palestinians have lived together in peace. It‘s a relatively new conflict contrary to popular belief“
“Palestinians like everyone else are entitled to the same freedom that Jewish people should have. That‘s what we‘re calling for, Equal Rights.”
“I don‘t tend to think that the Palestinian issue today is an Arab issue or a Muslim issue. It‘s a human issue…The Israelis will never be free until the Palestinians are free.”
“Both cultures have gotten so dysfunctional and so far away from believing in each other‘s humanity on all side that it‘s hard for me as a completely outside observer that coming together in the family of man again.”
“The best peace that will last like in the experience of many other countries is between two democracies, where a solution is not imposed from one side on the other but is accepted by both people.”
