Kathryn Bigelow Beats Ex-Husband to Break ‘Best Director’ Glass Ceiling

Avatar director, James Cameron was rooting for ex-wife Kathryn Bigelow (who had a better seat than him at the ceremony) to beat him out for Best Director for her direction of The Hurt Locker and tonight Ms. Bigelow made history becoming the first ever female winner in the Best Director category.

In 1976, Lina Wertmüller was the first female nominated for Best Director for her film Seven Beauties. Since then, Jane Campion (The Piano) and Sofia Coppola (Lost in Translation) were nominated in 1993 and 2003 respectively.
With The Hurt Locker winning for Best Picture, the lowest-grossing Best Picture ever beat out the highest grossing film of all time in every category it was nominated in.
