Who SHOULD Win 2010 VMAs

At 9pm tonight, MTV will hand out their infamous Moonmen at the Video Music Awards from Los Angeles’ Nokia Theatre.

Ignoring for a minute that the VMAs has dubiously devolved into a popularity contest for the Twitter and US Weekly age, these are BNW’s (slightly idealistic) picks for who should clear mantle space for the Moonmen they deserve to win:

VIDEO OF THE YEAR:
Lady Gaga, “Bad Romance
Florence + The Machine, “Dog Days Are Over”
30 Seconds To Mars, “Kings and Queens”
Lady Gaga featuring Beyoncé, “Telephone”
Eminem, “Not Afraid”
B.o.B featuring Hayley Williams, “Airplanes”

As great as it would be to see Florence Welch pull off the upset of the year (if not the decade), there is little doubt that any music video had the cultural and artistic impact that Bad Romance so rightly deserved in the last year.

BEST COLLABORATION:
B.o.B featuring Hayley Williams, “Airplanes”
Beyoncé featuring Lady Gaga “Video Phone (Extended Remix)”
Lady Gaga featuring Beyoncé, “Telephone
3OH!3 featuring Ke$ha, “My First Kiss”
Jay-Z & Alicia Keys, “Empire State of Mind”

Jay-Z & Alicia Keys along with B.o.B. and Hayley Williams produced the best songs in this category, but there is no doubt that Telephone had the best video of the bunch.

BEST FEMALE VIDEO:
Lady Gaga, “Bad Romance
Ke$ha, “Tik Tok”
Katy Perry featuring Snoop Dogg, “California Gurls”
Beyoncé featuring Lady Gaga, “Video Phone (Extended Remix)”
Taylor Swift, “Fifteen”

I said it before, I’ll say it again : Fuck a Taylor Swift. If the cutesy post-pubescent interloper somehow manages to nab Bad Romance‘s prize Kurt Loder should just bum-rush the stage with pre-detonated explosives taped to his chest in violent protest.

BEST MALE VIDEO:
Eminem, “Not Afraid
Usher featuring Will.I.Am, “OMG”
B.o.B featuring Hayley Williams, “Airplanes”
Drake, “Find Your Love”
Jason Derulo, “In My Head”

Eminem has the most iconic song and just barely edges out B.o.B. and Drake with the better video in this otherwise largely anemic category artistically speaking.

BEST HIP HOP VIDEO:
B.o.B featuring Hayley Williams, “Airplanes”
Eminem, “Not Afraid
Drake, Kanye West, Lil Wayne & Eminem, “Forever”
Kid Cudi featuring MGMT & Ratatat, “Pursuit Of Happiness”

MTV managed to choose 4 amazing songs by some of the year’s biggest names in Hip Hop, but anyone except Eminem taking home this award in 2010 just feels downright wrong.

BEST NEW ARTIST:
Ke$ha
Jason Derulo
Justin Bieber
Nicki Minaj
Broken Bells

Broken Bells are the only truly interesting act in this otherwise largely middling category.

BEST POP VIDEO:
Lady Gaga, “Bad Romance
Katy Perry featuring Snoop Dog, “California Gurls”
Ke$ha, “Tik Tok”
Beyoncé featuring Lady Gaga, “Video Phone (Extended Remix)”
B.o.B featuring Bruno Mars, “Nothin’ on You”

Lady GaGa was Pop music in 2010. Also, the thought of Katy Perry taking home any awards for California Gurls (the single or the video) would only further de-value any remaining semblance of credibility the VMAs still enjoy.

BEST ROCK VIDEO:
30 Seconds To Mars, “Kings and Queens”
Muse, “Uprising”
Paramore, “Ignorance”
Florence + the Machine, “Dog Days Are Over
MGMT, “Flash Delirium”

Florence + The Machine cannot go home empty-handed, though 30 Seconds To Mars and MGMT also produced cinematic and engaging videos.

BEST DANCE MUSIC VIDEO:
Lady Gaga, “Bad Romance
Enrique Iglesias featuring Pitbull, “I Like It”
Cascada, “Evacuate The Dancefloor”
David Guetta featuring Akon, “Sexy Chick”
Usher featuring Will.I.Am, “OMG”

How tragic would it be if MTV’s first-ever ICON didn’t even receive a nomination for her Feedback video and Cascada somehow walked away with a moonman? GaGa all the way in this category.
