Here is McCain’s statement on the Internet Freedom Act of 2009:

“Today I’m pleased to introduce the Internet Freedom Act of 2009 that will keep the Internet free from government control and regulation,” McCain said. “It will allow for continued innovation that will in turn create more high-paying jobs for the millions of Americans who are out of work or seeking new employment. Keeping businesses free from oppressive regulations is the best stimulus for the current economy.”

Right, because corporate control of information is much better than McCain’s imagined ‘government control’ of the Internet. As for his argument about the economic benefits of his bill to block Net Neutrality, this video pretty much refutes that entire argument.

Using some of the most influential thinkers behind some of the greatest online innovations in recent years, this video illustrates exactly what is at risk in the Net Neutrality debate – American ingenuity, creativity, opportunity, and success.

What each of the people in this video illustrate is that Net Neutrality is much bigger than how much you pay for the Internet or your connection speeds, without the freedom of the Internet there would be no Google, no eBay, no Skype, no Youtube, or no Kiva.org. It was the openness of the Internet that allowed for a few people to completely transform global culture, economy, and vocabulary:

“The Internet has no idea what‘s being transported on it. It doesn‘t know if its voice, or video, or a piece of a webpage or part of an email. Incredibly that means the network is completely open to any conceivable application you can invent“

“I should have a right as Internet user to have access to a neutral architecture that lets me innovate with no more restriction than fulfilling the technical protocols“

“Companies like Google, eBay, and Yahoo! all started as just a few people with a great idea in an apartment, or a garage, or a trailer, and grew up to what they are today from that start. What we risk losing is the next generation, because they‘ll need someone‘s permission“

Why are John McCain, Comcast & other corporate interests against Net Neutrality? [Twitter]
